Stop Making Excuses

You can have excuses or you can have results. You can't have both. Make a choice!


I don’t really love working out (I’m not crazy!), but I love the energy I get from movement and if I don’t get it, my body lets me know by craving sugar or through total loss of clarity and motivation. So, when I think it’s too hard or I don’t have time for it, I know I’m losing sight of what's important.


So, I do this thing that I learned which has been an absolute game changer (yes, another one!). When I have to do something hard (like get out of bed early), I use the 5 second rule thanks to @melrobbins.


Here's how it works:


As soon as the alarm goes off, I simply count down 5-4-3-2-1 and when I get to one, I jump out of bed before my brain has a chance to get in the way. Now this might sound a little crazy, but I promise you it does work and here is why.


Your brain is always trying to protect you from discomfort. You see, it's not very evolved, it's a couple of million years old and it has not changed from back in caveman days when there were creatures constantly trying to kill us.


What happens is that any time we feel discomfort, our brain goes into hyper alert and we have 5 seconds to override it before we go back to our old comfortable patterns, otherwise known as our comfort zone.


So, anytime you want to do something new or difficult, try using the 5 Second Rule. I promise it can help you up-level any area of your life.
